Pedro Parra Pencopolitano Red 2015

Description: A few months ago, I had the pleasure of going to a seminar with a Chilean winemaker, talking about the importance of terroir, specifically soil type, in quality wine production, specifically in Chile. Well, this winemaker was Pedro Parra, and he was able to talk for about 45 minutes about different types of granite. While for a layperson that makes you crazy, for a winemaker, it makes you brilliant. This man's wines are breaking ground in a wine region once known only for bulk production of bad table wines. Now, Itata is rapidly becoming one of the coolest, most sought after wine regions in South America. Aged in neutral foudre, this blend of Malbec, Syrah, Carménère, Carignan, Cinsault, and Pais offers rich fruit mingled with notes of earth, black tea, and a striking, granitic minerality. Pedro Parra is definitely on to something here.
